Why Curt Schilling is a Hall of Famer
August 16, 2008
Say what you will about Curt Schilling, I say this: HALL OF FAMER.
Now I know there will be folks who claim that his 216 wins aren't enough to put him in Cooperstown and I say this: DON DRYSDALE 209 WINS.
And others will maintain that his ERA is too high and or that he didn't have enough 20 game seasons and I say this: 3,116 STRIKEOUTS. Everybody ahead of Curt in is the Hall of Fame or named Clemens or Big Unit or Blyleven.
If World Series rings are your gold standard, then Curt is all set. If Post Season dominance is your ideal, then 10-2 with a 2.23 career Post Season ERA should work for you.
If Red Sox history and drama are what you are about I throw a bloody sock your way and a reminder that Curt "called the shot" with his early 2004 prediction in a Ford F-150 ad.
But for me, his call to the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon Friday put him over the top. Speaking to the Big O with his usual candor, number 38 told the world that the stories of cancer survivors had moved him to tears while he sat in his driveway listening, and prompted him to call and pledge $50,000 to the Dana Farber Cancer Research. Here's a guy who hasn't thrown a pitch for the Sox this season, a man possibly at the end of his career, but still pitching in. Heart, Brains and Courage....sound like the the Wizard of Oz? No. Sounds like the Hall of Fame to me.
