It's All About the Second Sackers
September 5, 2008
Throughout Red Sox history, the second baseman is the most undervalued position compared to the overall impact of the players at that position. Case in point, Mark Bellhorn in 2004. Here was a pigpen lookin', hairy little borderline Big Leaguer who struck out alot, wasn't flashy in the field, a what was he anyway, a bell or a horn? DING, HONK, RING, BEEP. Bellhorn was every bit as huge in the 2004 Playoffs as Manny, Papi or Schilling. Remember the homers off the pole and off that lady's boobs in left field? DING, HONK. Bellhorn.
And who can forget the rookie year of Mike Andrews in '67, or the clutch play of the late Jerry Adair when Andrews was hurt? How about Denny Doyle as a late season clutch guy in 1975? Marty Barrett was ALCS MVP in 86, and of course Mark Bellhorn in 04. But nothing is better than having your second sacker be a real MVP candidate and that is exactly what Dustin Pedroia has become. This kid is the cockiest, shortest, strangest looking MVP candidate I can remember, but he's also one other thing....the best second baseman I've ever seen.
