Justin Masterson
July 8, 2008

First, Terry Francona has forgot more about baseball then I will ever know.  Second, I love the fact that Clay Bucholz appears to be headed back to the rotation.  I think he is going to be very special, and he and Lester are going to be great starters for years to come.  But, I am concerned about the move to send Justin Masterson to the minors to work on coming out of the bullpen.  I believe young players just want a chance to play Major League Baseball, and they don't care what their role is.  He will have a positive attitude and do the right thing for the team.  I'm just not convinced that what is good for this year (I believe Masterson could be a great asset to the bullpen this year), is the right thing for the future.  Management did not want to threaten the future by trading stud prospects to get Santana, and I think that is very wise.  This move, with Masterson, could stunt his growth as a starter and set him back.  Young arms need innings and a chance to see different situations.  Plus, this could ruin all the positive he gained from the good starts he had made already this season.  I'm not sure but it is a concern.  I trust Terry and he pushes all the right buttons.  I just hope this is not a fix for this year, at the costs of the organizations future.  Terry knows his people and I believe in him and in the BOSTON RED SOX!!!!!  Go Sox!!!!

great blog very insightful , that said I do not think it will harm his development i think they are considering him for long relief and he will get his work in on off days ,I believe he could benefiet from the experience and in the process help the team , just my opinion

BOOM BOO..
If he was older, maybe it would hinder him...he's young & hasn't been developed that long as a starter. No way he'll get set back as a starter...and this probably IS a fix for this year so they won't give up any prospects...you already have a great candidate in house, why go out of your house to look for another one???

good blog!I agree with *cleats" after all....Masterson is the first Red Sox pitcher since 1912 to make his first four consecutive starts in Fenway Park and not lose any of them!!! nuff said! ;)

Terry~RS..
Very good points. Truth be told we won't know whether it's a good idea or not till it happens. But I do believe in our baseball people, they've been good about talent evaluation and what not. Keep the Faith; 14/09

If he needs innings, it shouldn't be at the expese ot the big club. Let him work out his issues in triple-A. Get Clay back in the rotation.

I didnt see Masterson having too many issues. I think he got a bunch of quality starts while Clay was out.

This move is crazy...You need to think long term not for just this year. How many more years will you have Wakefield? Can you imagine a 5 man rotation of Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Buckholtz and Masterson. 1-5 no other team is gonna come close. There all young guys in their 20's and all should be able to give you 6 maybe 7 innings every night so how many relievers do you need to get to Papelborn? Why waste this guys talent throwing to 2-3 batters per night. This is just another stupid idea like letting Varitek hit and run the other night with Lowell on first down a run. 2 old slow guys with a guys at the plate with 3 hits in 68 at bats. ...View More

Wolfeman..
Usually with young arms they like to limit the number of innings they pitch each year. Moving him to the bullpen will most likely help with that. That way when September rolls around he'll still have a fresh arm and be able to help the team. Either out of the bullpen or as a starter.

As you said young Kids just want the chance to play so he will surly dapt to any roll that thr Sox want for him he just wants to play and well he will.

NMSOXNAT..
Thinking long term, let's throw them all in the rotation after the all star break. When they stumble and can't even reach the 6th inning, what do we do then??? They are all young guys...operative word being young. The days of a young pitcher coming into the league & pitching 15 or more starts[in which they pitch 6 or more innings per]has come and gone. There is too much $$$ invested in these "young guys" by the Red Sox to let them be handled like that. In the 70's,the Texas Rangers made a 19 yr. old[I believe]pitcher their #1 draft pick...all I can remember is his first name was David. The experiment didn't last long or with much success.I,for one,do not see the Boston Red Sox organization pulling a Texas Rangers-style move. ...View More

Who's to say he won't be back up this season as a reliever? That's what I thought was happeneing. He was going down to get some middle relief innings and see how he made the adjustment in double a and/or triple a before a major league game was hoisted upon him. We need to build his confidence and are already trying confidence building for too many relievers already. (Oki, Timlin, Hansen... you name it.) I think he'll be back before September. ...View More

I wonder if Masterson will become a SP again in 2009. For fantasy baseball fans, we now have a difficult decision to make. Should we keep Justin for next year or do we drop him for help today?

I'd drop him if I had him...
