Hazel, I'm gonna miss ya on NESN, please stay in town!

NESN and longtime Sox  and Bruins'  reporter Hazel Mae are parting ways on July 1.

It's a sad day,   to be sure.   While some folks have poked fun at the attractive Ms. Mae,   she does know baseball.    She has a vibrant personality,   and the fans have enjoyed that during her stay on NESN.

Most of all,  she took her responsibilities seriously,   while recognizing that the sports world isn't all that serious,   and she apparently has a sense of humor.

But...  first Tina Cervasio  departed,  and now Hazel is out at NESN.

WHY?

I can only come up with some guesses;  but,  it seems that,  historically,   NESN has not wanted anyone to become a permanent fixture -- and a legend -- on their station.

In the early 1990s,   NESN management angered many Sox fans by releasing the popular and legendary Ned Martin from play-by-play duties.

Could it be that the broadcast and cable outlets don't want any more announcers developing a permanent status?      We grew up listening to Curt Gowdy,   Ned Martin,  Jim Woods,   Ken Coleman,   Fred Cusick,   Bob Wilson,  and Johnny Most.

All were revered ,   and we had a set of familiar,   friendly voices to tune into.    The only long-term "legends: that remain are Joe Castiglione and Gil Santos.

I make this assessment because just two years ago,   the friendly Jerry Trupiano was released,   breaking up a 14-year working partnership with Mr. Castiglione.

Trupe had his critics,  to be sure,  but the radio broadcasts haven't been the same since.

The broadcast industry may not have any tolerance for new legends,   and it appears that future generations will have to adapt to not having them around.

And I think it's lousy.

i agree Trupiano leaving was a bad move, still my fave way to here a game is on the radio... letting so many good people walk out the door has finaly bit NESEN in the a**.. i think Hazel left for jsut that reason, no new long term contract 5+ years. and she decided that its time to look for a place to hang my hat.. i wish her nothing but the best!

Hey.... Wouldn't you consider the Remdawg as a "long-term legend?" I miss Trup as well. The chemistry that Castiglione and Trupiano had is often hard to find, and I don't think WEEI has come close to matching it since Jerry's departure. As far as NESN losing both Tina C. & Hazel Mae within a year's time? This is crazy!!! What are they doing to us? I just hope Hazel Mae's replacement has half the moxy & sports knowledge that Hazel had. WE'LL MISS YOU HAZEL MAE!!!

John Gil..
I was going to say the same thing about Remy being a long-term legend. I can't even imagine what would happen if they let him go. But what does Trupiano have to do with NESN? That's WEEI/WRKO, unless you're really blaming Sox management, assuming they had a say in both changes. I'm just still bummed that Eric Frede no longer does the sideline reporting. I liked it when he and Roche would go into the stands. It seems like they're afraid to have a woman go into the stands, or they're just tired of talking to the fans in general--lol. But I liked it when there was more interaction with the fans.

to reply to your comments and clarify my point - Remy is the exception -- everyone else seems to be a replaceable part. Trupe was an Entercomm employee, but the Sox have the final say and approval over announcers. As far as Cervasio and Mae, remember that the Sox *OWN* NESN, although it's managed by a different group of managers. But, not wanting to have someone become a permanent, warm, fuzzy face or personality seems to be a broadcast industry trend these days.

I don't know enough about the "NESN track record" for hosts, analysts and other on-air folks to comment on that point. But in the TV biz, these types of jobs - a sports reporter of sorts on a "local" (albeit huge and very popular) sports channel is just a step for many people to the next great thing. It may also be that NESN has tight purse strings and isn't willing to pay more money to keep some people there, since there's always another Hazel Mae willing to take the job for less pay. Regardless of her reasons for leaving, good luck to Hazel Mae.

Lauren...
Sometimes change isn't always for the best...I think we'll see plenty of Tina in the Boston area;there's talk of her going to Ch.4 to replace Bob Lobel...

MIKEYMOM..
I don't think it's a conspiracy. Stepping stone, most likely, as stated above. Or maybe there could be a little of that 'old boys' network still in place...meaning they don't want a female to become legondary. I still think it was more their decision than NESN's. I LOVED tina! (I thought she was on pregnancy leave but she would have been back a bit ago if that was the case...don't know where I got that idea.) I have never really warmed up to Hazel, though she seems quite knowledgable, she almost tries to be 'too cute'. I don't know if you know what I mean. The new gal seems to be fitting in pretty well. Of course, I don't wish anything but good for Hazel Mae. She certainly is capable and worthy of much face time. I hope she is happy wherever she ends up.

Scoobs, I'm not crying "conspiracy" but a mode of doing business ... the same happened in the radio world in the late 1960s - where a formula for "generic" disk jocks was established, and no one ever achieved the status of an Arnie Ginsburg or Cousin Bruce Morrow again after that. The days of legendary team announcers like Ernie Harwell, Curt Gowdy, Mel Allen, and even Vin Scully are rapidly coming to a close.

I'm not the biggest fan of news or media types or the news and media business either. But I do like Hazel and wish her the best.

I wouldn't bet on Tina C coming back anytime soon. She moved back to NYC to be closer to family. She's getting a lot of work on MSG as I seem to catch her on everytime I'm flipping through the channels.
