Lester worried?
February 4, 2008

Who do you guys think will be the fifth pitcher? Jon or Clay?  I saw an article today that Lester has reported for training early (ten days ahead of schedule).  Is he just dedicated (not saying that he isn't), or does he want to get some extra work in before everyone else shows up?  No matter what happens, our rotation will be stacked with plenty of bench behind it.

buccholz will not be the 5th starter during the 1st half of the season. they dont want to push him too hard, the sox learned a hard lesson with papelbon in 06. he will probably see some time after the all star break though

yea our rotation this year is gonna be sick. the sox will probably be real hesitant with bucholtz not trying to wear him out. unless somebody goes down i see him pitching down the stretch in august and into september again.

Soxtober..
i think he is dedicated (demonstrated when he got cancer, yet is playing baseball again), the real question is how long will it take for schill or wake to end up on the dl so clay gets a slot in the rotation

cali... elaborate? why do you think that? Its already been stated that schill is in Great shape to start this season.. Timmy might go down for awhile but I doubt either will have significant down time

Yeah, I hard the same thing about Schill, Sawxfan. I'm a little more worried about Papi. Has anybody heard anything about him? I haven't been following any sports news since 2 weeks before the SB. Superstition I guess. Hard to explain. Lester is good to go. I'm wicked stoked to see how this upcoming season will go. I'm smellin' a repeat! GO SOX!

I think Jon L. will be the fifth starter, with Clay B. used as a sixth, spot starter if needed. Why? Mr. Buchholz has more options. Jon Lester was treated with kid gloves, owing to his recovery. On the other hand, with three guys over 40 on the Sox pitching staff, there's going to be plenty of opportunity to warm up the "Pawtucket-Boston Trolley Line" and I'm sure that we will see a lot of Clay Buchholz during the season -- and certainly in the September roster expansion. As I said in other places, we need a quantity of quality young arms because of the aging staff. We managed to keep Lester, Buchholz, and Masterson -- the depth is far more valuable to the Sox right now than the might that one Johann Santana could provide. You have three arms over 40 and all of them spent time on the DL last year. Lester, Gabbard, Buchholz, Snyder, and DelCarmen all filled in admirably. ...View More

section15-i totally agree with you on the Santana issue-the depth is much more valuable to the team now. Good to hear what everyone's thoughts are...I am getting more antsy by the day!
