2008 MLB PIcks
February 23, 2008

So I have a weekly column in my college paper and this weeks column is going to be ET's 2008 MLB picks. So here they are, let me know what you think. AL EAST-THE SOX- Most of the key players of the 07 World Championship team are coming back. Manny is finally focused and has been busting his butt this offseason. I look for him to put up MONSTER numbers this year. The only real question mark is the Sox starting rotation, which I dont think is that big of a problem. I think the Sox will use Tavarez for the beginning of the season and then he will be put in the pen for spot work and rookie Clay Buchholz will take over. AL CENTRAL-DETROIT TIGERS - With new 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera and starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis the Tiggers have one of the best offenses in the Majors. There big question is the pen. Todd Jones is not getting any younger and Zumaya will be out until at least the All-Star break I can see some troubles there. AL WEST - LA ANGELS - The Angels have one of the best outfields in the game with Torii Hunter, Vlad Guerrero (as long as he stays health with his hand), Garrett Anderson, and Gary Mathews. There pitching is also great. I look for John Lacky and Jared Weaver to have great years and K-Rod is always scary coming out of the pen. AL WILD CARD - CLEVELAND INDIANS - For the first time in years the Yanks will not make the playoffs, and I am not, not picking them because I hate them. i am not picking them because the Indians are a better team. They were only one win away from the World Series last year. Grady Sizemore, Big CC, Fausto Carmona are the real deal. NL EAST - NY METS - Now I know they choked big time last year but they made a MAJOR upgrade to their pitching staff this offseason with the signing of Santana. Petey looks like he is going to be healthy for the first time in a couple years and Jose Reyes and Jared Wright are two of the best young players in baseball. NY CENTRAL - BREW CREW - Prince Fielder, JJ Hardy, Ben Sheets they are all great players. I look for Derek Turnbow to also have a great year. I just like this team for some reason. NL WEST - SD PADRES - I look for Jake Peavy to have another stellar year. This year they will not miss the playoffs. I dont really know much about the NL West to be truthful so this is just a wild guess. NL WILD CARD - CHICAGO CUBS - With the addition of Kosuke Fukudome I look for the Cubbies to make the NL Wild Card. I also like Kerry Wood in the closer role (if he can stay healthy). Soriano is also a baller. I look for good things from the Northsiders this year. Those are my picks. Let me know what you guys think. MUCH REPECT. ONLY LIVE THE MAFIA. RESPECT/LOYALTY/FAMILY. REPEAT IN 08/RICE IN 09

I cannot argue with your logic there. On gut feeling though I pick the Jays to take the AL Wild Card. They've had a scary team for the past couple of years but have had health problems. If they stay healthy this year, they're gonna be a scary team.

Elmedius did one heck of a breakdown of the Tigers that you might enjoy. The Tigers are clearly the team to beat in the Central and a good bet to be in the ALCS. That said, pay particular attention to the breakdown that Elmedius made concerning the Tigers and Sox pens. VERY good in my opinion. As for the NL East, well that MIGHT be the best divisional race in the NL this year, IF the Braves play to their potential. The NL West ONLY sees the Giants as a non-contender so expect that race to be tight as well, with the probable wild card team coming out of it. The NL Central is the weakest division in baseball. I don't see the wild card team coming out of there honestly, so I'll take the Loveable Losers as the divisional winners, in a close race. If Ben Sheets holds together for a full season, then MAYBE they'll win but his track records is suspect. I like your choice for wild card in the AL. Not sure about the West though...Look for Seattle to make some noise (Seriously...). Things MIGHT come together for them to make a run (Bold prediction I know...). Either way, this season should be a remarkable one. Coming off of the debatably best season in baseball history, I look for good things... ...View More
