Three for the Money !!
July 30, 2008
Carl Yastrzemski had the greatest single season this writer has ever seen in 1967 he single handedly carried the sox to the world series, and when he got there he got even hotter he hit Bob Gibson like no one had before or since , however Gibson stymied the rest of the team , and we all know what happened, well after sixty seven Yaz had several great seasons and finished his storied career right here with the red sox , when the dust had settled he gained admittance to the Hall of fame , but for several seasons between 1972 and 1977 he was the target of the fenway Park boo birds .
Yaz who had done so much for this team was booed relentlessly , his disposition turned sour and he declined interviews , he stopped signing autographs and became quite surely , such js the power of the press ! It got to him and it effected his play , as it would anyone , but It got better for Yaz as he aged gracefully and became the Red Sox captain and senior statesman , he was deferred to as a great in residence and as he chased three thousand and four hundred respectively the fans once again realized how good a player he truly was and got back on the bandwagon , but for so many years he was accused of not hustling and taking off plays , the press fails to realize these guys are human .
And what about Teddy ballgame , the press rode him relentlessly and how did the splinter respond , he spit at a reporter, he refused autographs , he told them all to go to hell and he withdrew into himself , once again
The press is relentless in its chase of a story , even if it has to instigate the greatest hitter who ever lived in order to get it .now its on to Manny , one of the most feared hitters in the game , a member of the The 500 home run club only the 24th player in history history to have 500 home runs, 1500 rbis, 1000 walks, 475 doubles, and a 300 batting average , joining only Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, and Frank Thomas . .not bad company ! But getting back to the point .
What do these three players have in common , they all played in Boston under the scrutiny of the media and a fan base who are both knowledgeable and , demanding , if there is a slow news day the player with the highest profile and who is the most visable becomes the focus . The man of the hour at this time is Manny , and no, he has not handled the scrutiny well, he has become surly he has moped and . complained He has in fact acted just like Yaz and Teddy before him , at least he hasn’t spit on a reporter yet . But he has asked for a trade , as I said the Boston media and fan base can have that effect on a player and once again they are only human . But as Yaz and Teddy before him ,Manny is a Hall of famer in residence and should be shown some respect. Why do we find a need to disrespect our aging stars ,
Just my thoughts on the matter .
Is Rodney Dangerfield in the house ?
