Who is the greatest 3rd Baseman to ever don a red sox uniform? Simple direct and to the point . I will put up a few suggestions and some stats as to why I think they are worthy of consideration. I If you have someone I may have overlooked please add them . please respect others opinions . Thank you . From here on out it gets even more difficult as we go on , culminating with left field, next in the series first base followed by left field , if you wish to do starting pitchers and closers let me know. 1) Larry Gardner , 17 seasons, 10 with Boston , .282 career avg. .319 career high avg. 165 stolen bases Was contemporary of Speaker ,and Carrigan, played for 4 world champions, 3 with Boston and one with Cleveland.
2) Vern Stephans , 15 Seasons five with Boston , career avg. 286 career high 307, eight time all star. 247 home runs .
3) Frank Malzone , 12 seasons, all but his final In Boston .274 Career Avg. 295 Career High ,8 time all star. 133 home runs three gold gloves at the hot corner .
4) Rico Petrocelli , he was on our list of shortstops but over the last 6 years of his career played primarily 3rd base for the sox , played third on 1975 pennant winner . played two positions in two world series for the sox
5) Butch Hobson 8 seasons , career avg. 248 , career high .265 hit 98 career home runs single season high 30 in 1977, strong armed fan favorite.
6) Wade Boggs , 18 Season’s career Avg. 328 career high .368, 12 time all star 2 time gold glove winner, won five batting titles, Seven consecutive 200 hit seasons , led the league in 1985 with 240 a record at the time Wade spent seven years in the minors before getting his break when wade got his shot when former batting champ carney Lansford went don with an injury in 1982.
7) Carney Lansford, Played 15 seasons career avg. .290 . Career high 336. One time all star , 224 stolen bases , Only two years in Boston but won a batting title for the sox when he played here
8) Bill Mueller, 11 season’s, 291 career avg. 326 career won the 2003 batting championship with the sox .326,played third base in championship year 2004,
9 ) Mike Lowell, 11 season’s .279 career avg. .324 career high , 198 career home runs , 4 time all star , 2005 gold glove winner @ 3rd base led the league in sac fly’s 2002 , was third baseman on 2007 championship team .
10) Honorable mention for the hot corner , Kevin Youkilis, Scott Cooper , Johnny Pesky, Shea Hillenbran, Joe Foy , Carl Yastrzemski, Jimmy Foxx, Jon Valentin, Pete Runnels, Jim Tabor,Joe Cronin.
