Schilling back in 09??
November 21, 2008

Soooooo I just wanted to shift everyone's blogging thoughts for a sec see what everyones thoughts are on the possibility of Schilling returning for half of a season. Here are my thoughts, let's see if you agree:

First of all, I LOVE SCHILLING. He's my favorite pitcher and I would absolutely LOVE for him to come back, but as a 42 year old starter who just had major shoulder surgery, I'm not so sure if I'd trust him in a starting position. He'd probably only be able to get through a good 3 or 4 innings on a GOOD night, and then what? He starts a few games for half of a season and wastes how much money that could be put elsewhere? I'm not so sure how I feel about it. While the fan in me says YES BRING HIM BACK, the realist in me says thanks but no thanks.

If priced appropriately, and if a roster spot was open, why not?

I think it is difficult for guys like Schilling to "hang it up", even if it is the right thing to do. Mussina got it right, in my opinion. Apparently he went into last year knowing that it would be his last, regardless of the outcome. Good for him that he was able to have a good season after all. The fact that it may affect him getting into the hall of fame, yet he is retiring anyway, makes a big statement. He knew his time was up. So, I guess this is a long winded way of saying to Schill - "happy trails to you ... until we meet again!" ...View More

I don't think it's a good idea at this particular time. But if it were July and we had a lot of starters on the DL, I'd probably think it would be a good idea to sign Schill to the prorated contract and what not.

During the ALCS he threw out one of the first pitches and couldnt even make it to the plate. I love what he did for us, the man will retire and go into the HOF as a member of the Red Sox. With that said, he's done.

There's a 99.9% chance that if he does pitch again, it will not be with the Red Sox. But then again, Roger Clemens was 99.9% sure that he was retired at the end of the 2003 season.

Maybe...but not for the Red Sox.. He reaped a hefty salary for this past season...for doing nothing!!

I would say - please - no way -- Schilling's done a great job in his career - Curt, rest on your laurels.

I've always had great admiration for Curt. We were lucky to have him--he's (was?) an outstanding pitcher. That said, I'd rather see him leave on a high note. pugs

I agree with FastBall-CS got paid for doing nothing in '08, will he work for free in '09? Thanks for your bloody sock, Curt - but it's time to ride off into the sunset now.

I've been giving this some thought also. You can never have too much pitching and Curt is certainly a gamer when it counts the most. He is the anti-A-Rod.

I have a great deal of respect for Curt for all his efforts with the Sox. I also respect the fact that he will tell it like it is and not kiss someone's ass because it's politically correct, so to speak. I have no idea what it is like to retire from baseball, I imagine it is a difficult decision. I would rather be remembered for the great World series win, and retire on that note. It would be a shame to be remembered for a crappy comeback showing if he wasn't up to the task. ...View More

its never easy for an elite player to hang it up.. or a bad one for that matter.. the hall awaits you Kurt, start your walk

As with the Tek issue I'm mixed. If he is the Shill of the 04 season then yes, but if he is the Pitcher that could not make it to the plate in a "First Pitch then no". What would scare me is a "Brokendown" Schill pitching to a "Brokendown" Tek in a close game with the Yanks or Rays.

Looking back at the 2004 playoffs, those we're some good times. Schill pitched with alot of heart and always has. Now to me, if he belives he still has it in him and can still pass a physical, the potential is far greater than the risk. We're talking about possibly one of the best pitchers of all time.

I think it's time for old Shill to have unlaced 'em for the last time , like sec15 said above "rest on your laurels" He givin so much to this team . Then again , if Curt really feels like he can pitch some more then , well, i guess you let him throw (very limited)in Florida . and go from there .

I'm thinking the Sox will explore his availability, not necessarily as a starter, providing they check in with the Big Schill to see if he is in shape.

Schill should go out while he's on top. not over play his carreer like so many others and be labled a has been.

Could his contract be prorated to include the money we paid him this season? If so, then go for it. If not, let someone else deal with his rehab and medical issues.

Although we appreciate Curt for all he's contributed to the Sox in his time here, I think for his own good, he should retire. If he comes back, awesome. But I think he should quit while he's ahead.

inluvwit..
If he'll pitch for free to make up for all the money he made for doing nothing, I'm game for a couple of outings. If he goes down in flames under those circumstances, he's done in my book. He has an awfully big mouth, both when it comes to sports and when it comes to politics, and I can do without that. He is ridiculous sometimes. So, while I do appreciate everything he did for us, especially in 2004, and especially in the community, I think it's time to say bye, bye Curt. ...View More

I've got some years on Mr. Blah Blah Blah, But that pic posted up there shows his Pro baseball gut as big as my Pro couch gut .. blah blah blah, 50/50 crap shoot. Either Curt stays and makes a last stand in New England riding on his Bush Conservatism or he rides away into the Sunset where it doesn't really matter........ Either way it'll be Politics NOT Baseball .. My opinion of course Blah Blah Blah........ ...View More
