Welcome Red Sox Nation Governors... BUT

Some folks over on the 2008 RSN board might like to be honored with your presence... and...
It might be good of you to go over there and actively seek feedback from active RSN card-carrying members -- we are less than four weeks away from the first 2009 ticket sale and Christmas at Fenway....
And, perhaps, the New England governors, at the very least , could make an appearance at the Christmas at Fenway event....
Only a suggestion or...

Above you see a young, attractive couple. They're sitting at Fenway Park in this photo, awaiting the start of the sixth game of the 2007 American League Championship Series. My wife Joan and I had one of our "weekly dates" and attended the game, and asked them to come along.

'nuff ced. But I will give a couple of words of advice to the site administration/owner.
Sensationalizing the tasering is one thing. I guess it (remotely) qualifies as news, even though there's a lot more baseball news concerning the Red Sox beyond two security incidents at Tropicana Field.
But I have no idea what you're trying to promote, or what type of crowd you're trying to attract to this...

I received a disturbing e-mail yesterday.
From Sawxheads.com.
Highlighting and headlining a second tasering incident in Tropicana Field. They even made it a "featured blog". It's rather odd.
Whether this is police brutality or a response to English football-style hooliganism, one cannot say. We do not know what prompted the security response in St. Petersburg over the weekend.
If it's an...

The post-season has arrived!

Here are some tips for surviving the post-season if you are a die-hard Red Sox fan.
How to handle the workplace and the boss
Some of these late night games will have you dragging your butt at the office or warehouse or factory or wherever you work.
Don't make excuses. The best thing to remember is that YOUR boss likely ALSO stayed up late to catch that Sox game, or his/her family did. Unless you've got a job that involves...

To my fellow Sawxheads = this is a repost from May. I think it's worthy of reposting today - September 25. 43 years ago today , the Red Sox had their lowest point in post-WW2 Red Sox history, and arguably the worst point ever. There were some worse Red Sox teams, but I think that my blog - and the excellent Sports Illustrated article to which links are contained, tells what it was like to be a Red Sox fan...

At around 9:54 pm, the Red Sox clinched a playoff berth and officially eliminated the New York Yankees from post-season contention. All around Red Sox world, people are celebrating. It's a subdued party; there is the regret that the division crown has likely eluded us this year. The Sox will not have home field advantage in the first two rounds.
On the other hand -- there is good news. The...

An advisory -- no, not a walkway advisory, but this deals with post-season tickets just the same. So it's a consumer advisory.
The Red Sox have entered the electronic age, and their selling and distribution of post-season tickets is very 21st Century.
The majority of tickets have (or will be going to) season ticket holders. The majority of the remainder of tickets to Fenway games have been or will be sold via a...

Note - this is a Repost of a blog I did around a week or so ago. I bring it up because I mentioned this on September 11. In the meantime, on 9/16, Tony Massaroti raised the same (exact) issue in his column, the difference being that he thought Lester and Beckett would start games 1 and 2 in Anaheim, and I said it would be Lester and Matsuzaka. He makes a great point - a three man rotation could knock out the Angels. I...

If you remember the 2004 playoffs -- and who doesn't -- the then-monikered "Anaheim" Angels went down to defeat to, uh, the team from Boston. The Sox won the first two in Anaheim and came back home and David Ortiz' walk-off homer sent the Sox to the ALCS.
I can recall that my wife Joan had her head hidden, and as the ball was hit, I came out with the opening line from The Friendly Giant kids' show from the 60s =...

Jon Lester = another great pitching performance. It wasn't Jon at his very best, but very good ... and, he was extremely effective. The defense, including his own catch of a bunt, starting off a DP, set the tone for the game.
But he may have been left in too long ... still, highly effective. What was a bit bothersome, was that Francona didn't trust the rest of the bullpen to...

If you are the holder of one of the traditional season ticket plans ... you should have received your post-season ticket invoice already.

Home Run Evolution , and other things!
|
|
section15 wrote this 2 months ago on |
My neighbor, Ruff13, just made an interesting blog about the evolution of home runs.
There were changes made in the game in 1920. One involved the use of clean baseballs. Also, during the World War One era, balls began being more tightly wound, promoting more hits.
But - as Ruff13 pointed out, the requirement for clean baseballs after 1920 led to a home run explosion.
There were other...

I'm amazed that I'm discussing this. Maybe Edes did get to me... Gordon Edes led off his column with the Manny jaywalking non-story.

Tonight, I was looking for a picture of the old Pennant Grille. If you're an old-timer, you might remember that what is now called "The Cask and Flagon", on the northeast corner of Brookline Avenue and Lansdowne Street, was once a non-descript , modest, urban watering hole.
In an attempt to find one by using Google, I came across a June, 1965 article from Sports Illustrated, describing the state...

On Saturday, the Red Sox were hosting the Yankees, and were hanging on to a precarious lead. There had been a long rain delay, but the teams came out to finish the game.
The problem was, that the game ran so long, that it came up against the start of a NASCAR race. So the powers-that-be at FOX opted to pull the game, with Paps pitching in the top of the 9th.

When is Instant Replay justified?

Last night (1 April), Jason Varitek hit what apparently was a home run, in the sixth inning, in a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. In the dimly-lit McAfee Coliseum, the hit was declared a ball in play, and the Captain had to halt at second base.
This begs the question - SHOULD WE HAVE INSTANT REPLAY?
My opinion = "Well, sort of, gee whiz, maybe, perhaps."

I guess many Red Sox fans share the same sentiment that I do -- that Tina Cervasio's impending departure from NESN is a sad event.
Will she be missed? Yes. Will they get someone else? I'm sure they will.
I can readily accept the reasons advanced for her departure -- she wanted to return to New York, where she had been commuting back-and-forth to, while following the Sox on the road.
She is from New...

A lifetime batting average of .298 -- yes, you were overshadowed by your brother, but you are still, in the eyes of Red Sox Nation, deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame (and...
