Johnny Pesky
September 23, 2008

Many of you have been advocates for the Boston Red Sox to allow longtime fan favorite and former player Johnny Pesky to be allowed to return to the dugout during games - although in all honesty,I believe that MLB is the culprit here - to be with the team that he loves so much.

Well,Mr.Pesky is in for a much bigger honor.I have posted the tag for the story in the Boston Herald that Steve Buckley just broke about the team getting ready to retire his uniform number.

What do you think about that Red Sox fans ???

WONDERFUL! He has been with this team the better part of 6 decades, he is a Boston sports icon, and I, for one, would be thrilled to see his number up there with all the other greats! Great find Mikey!

UGH. This is a tough one for me. I believe that the retired 1, 4, 8, 9, and 27 are meant for the best of the best to ever wear the Red Sox uniform. I'm so conservative in my approach here that I don't even think Jackie Robinson's #42 belongs with the other numbers. (And this is nothing to do with Jackie Robinson, I admire and respect him as a human being as well as a player. I just don't believe a Dodger blue number belongs next to Red Sox greats) The rules are the rules and I don't believe in bending them. That being said, I've got a super soft spot where Pesky is concerned. I mean we're talking probably 70 years of Red Sox baseball here so emotionally I'm happy if #6 gets retired but logically I'm not so sure if it's the best thing. ...View More

I agree Buffer, but I am just going on pure sentiment and the fact that nobody will EVER have the tenure that Pesky has had...he bleeds Red Sox red more than any other. Christ, I started crying when they won the first title and the St Louis Sox crowd was chanting his name.

Agreed, Kippster. I cried then, and I cried when he and Yaz raised the banner, and I cried some more when to a man the 2007 team stepped aside and let him raise the second banner. Oh hell, screw my logical side, I'll be emotional today. CONGRATS PESKY!! (Still think he belongs in the dugout though) My God I am brilliant!! How about we petition Bud Selig to appoint Pesky as official MLB jersey police. That way Pesky can be in the dugout during every game to make sure that Terry Francona is wearing his jersey!! ...View More

That is awesome, his number should be retired. He is a Red Sox legend. Not only a great player but an icon. When he held the 2004 World Series Trophy I cried like a baby, again. He is Mr Red Sox and should have his number retired. Great job!!!! I think he should be in the dugout too but Mr Owner Bud Selig will never allow it!!!!

John Gil..
congratulations mr red sox, it's about god damn time. this man is a LIVING LEGEND for Sox fans and, really, fans of the sport. He's got more heart than anyone in the game, he may not have the required numbers but he's done more for this team than anyone else. I think it's amazing, rules are made to be broken!!!

Mrs. Tit..
Then, of course, we will run into the issue of BETTER PLAYERS that deserve to have their numbers retired...Jim Ed anyone? If Pesky has his retired, Jim should have his as well.

57 years in a Red Sox uniform! The stats might not have been the best but the man has stood by this team his entire life! If anyone deserves for the rules to be bent, its the Needle!
