Red Sox Books
February 12, 2008

So I am a pretty big reader, and I have read a lot of Red Sox books and i am bored tonight (mostly putting off my hw) so I decided to rank my top five Red Sox books, So here it is. 5. Fear Strikes Out - This was a great book, my pops read it to me when I was a young kid, maybe like 7-8 Jimmy Piersall was a crazy bastard! (The movie was good too) 4. The Ballpark: One Day Behind the Scenes at a Major League Game - This might be the first book dad read to me, he had to order it from the bookstore, they didn't have many book on Fenway or the Sox here. 3. Teammates - David Halbertstam is an amazing author, this is a MUST read for any Sox fan. 2. Feeding the Monster - This book was great, an inside look at the Sox front office, very well written. I couldnt put it down. 1. Now I can Die in Peace - I love Bill Simmons, I think he might be my favorite sports writer, I love his wit, I hope one day i can write as well as he can. Very good and funny read. I know there are some I am forgetting but those are my favorites. Also if your looking for another good read try The Final Season by Tom Stanton. Very good book! Thanks for reading, much respect!

A lot of peeps throw that "A Must Read for True fans" bit. I can't stand that crap personally, because it seems like such a freakin high school, peer pressure kinda thing to say. That's just me though (Not slamming you for it specifically, since it's such an infestation in the lingo of the nation). I'm all about reading Sox books (I own 12 myself and I've borrowed others), but my life isn't consumed by just baseball so I've got over 600 other books in the house. My favorite Sox book, was the first one I read: Red Sox: Triumphs and Tragedies. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the pre-80 Sox. The older players in my dream-team (have a look) are in place because of having read that book YEARS ago now. Good luck finding it though. I'd recommend trying a used book site like abebooks.com. You're probably not gonna find it otherwise. ...View More

And I forgot to mention, I completely agree that Teammates is a great book. Another Halberstam book (Though not about the Sox of course) is October 1964. That's just a great "life" book, that involves a baseball season and the battle for two cultures. Very few authors have the ability to move me on a personal level. This book, and thusly Halberstam make that list (It's even on my profile on Myspace as such). ...View More
