Who' who In Right Field ?
August 29, 2008

Who is the greatest Right fielder to ever don a red sox uniform? Simple direct and to the point . I will put up a few suggestions and some stats as to why I think they are worthy of consideration. If you have someone I may have overlooked please add them . At the end of the day I will tally the votes and post the results . And please respect others opinions . Thank you .

1) Tony Conigliaro played 8 seasons 264 career avg. 290, career high avg. all star 1967 Lead the league in home runs 35 in 1965 @ the age og 20 youngest player to ever hit 100 career home runs . Career cut short by injury

2) Ken Harrelson played 9 seasons 239career avg 275 career high nicknamed Hawk he had 131 career home runs all star 1968 career high 35 home runs 109 rbis in 1968

3) Reggie Smith again , he made our list of center fielder but he moved over to right after Tony C vacated the position and to acccomdate Tommy Harper in center, the following year harper moved to left and smith back to center as yaz was at first base see previous blog for Reggie’s stats

4) Dwight Evans, the other outfielder from that 1973 team, he played 20 seasons , hit for a 272 career avg. with a 305 high single season , he hit 385 career home runs and had a cannon for an arm .the three time all star had 8 gold gloves and lead the league in run scored in 1984, total bases in 1981,lead in home runs In strike shortend, 1981 season led the league in bb three times had 20 or more home runs in 9 strait and 11 out of twelve

5) Trot Nixon the original dirt dawg , 12 seasons still playing , career 274 avg. 306 high avg. 137 career home runs . Gritty tough and fan favorite

6) JD Drew , 11 year vet, 284 career avge. 323 career high 192 career home runs all star this year , showed clutch hitting in place of Ortiz ,

7) Troy O’leary , 11 seasons 274 caree avg. 306 career high 127 career home runs and lead the league in triples three times

8) thru 10 ) Tom Brunanski, Mickey Hatcher , Dave Kapler, Adam Stern Darren Brag ,

Dwight! I liked Troy O'leary a lot too, probably because I saw him a lot, but Dwight was far superior.

Dewey, hands down, no contest, not even room for debate, black and white, etc etc.

Loved that Dewey. Once saw him hit an inside-the-park grandslam against the Yankees (Mike Boddiker was pitching)--Sox won, 15-1; it was very SWEET. He was quite the outfielder as well. Roberto was in a class by himself, but he was never on the Sox! (RIP Roberto)

Most beloved would be Tony C, but the Greatest would be Dwight.

Always wondered why no hall consideration for Dewey. 8 Gold Gloves, dominated his position(who was better in Rightfield?) and became a good hitter. Look at his numbers.

I was wondering when this was coming back to the pages of SH...we will never know what Tony Conigliaro would have done in his career if tragedy hadn't struck;he sure was off to a great start. So,with that said...I'd be shocked if you received any other responses than Dwight Evens, the consummate professional ballplayer for the Boston Red Sox.He will forever be remembered for that unbelievable catch he made in RF at the wall to save a HR.Thanks for bringing this back bro... ...View More

MIKEYMOM..
I fully agree with you Nuff *IMO *he deserves consideration for the hall, he had great stats but the hall does not seem to give defense much consideration and he was superb in the field and his arm was like a howitzer

Darkhalf..
I've wondered about HOF for Dewey too. I mean he wasn't an offensive powerhouse but in my not so humble opinion his all around playerness is definitely enough for consideration.
