Regarding Manny ...
August 2, 2008

Hi Everyone,

As you are well aware, Manny is no longer swinging a bat at Fenway. Having been around Manny for several years, I have mixed emotions regarding his departure.

On one hand he is irreplaceable. It will be very difficult to replace his stats as well as his persona. On the other hand it was clear that he had become a very disruptive force on the team.

Regardless of whom you choose to blame, he had to go. Like most of you, I have always been always a Manny supporter. Although, as I have mentioned many times during broadcasts, his apparent lack of hustle at times was enough to drive me over the edge. In general, it was his likeable personality, and talent, that won us over.

Over the years their have been several episodes where he acted, or said things, that were hard to explain. So we learned to explain it away as "Manny being Manny." The lasts few weeks however can only be described as "Manny being maniacal."

As the saying goes, it always takes two to tango. However, a large share of the negative atmosphere that has been swirling around the team lately falls on Manny’s shoulders. And he brought it on himself for reasons that are very difficult to understand. Management cannot be held responsible. As of late even his teammates were having a difficult time talking to the media positively about Manny.

The Red Sox will now be able to clear the air and move on, Terry Francona will sleep much better I am sure, and Jason Bay should be welcomed with open arms.

I honestly wish Manny the best in the future and I hope he finds the peace he says he is looking for.

Jerry

Very well said, Remdawg! No someone explain this to the person who is calling us all "bandwagon" fans. That term is thrown around way too much. Red Sox Nation is a family. There is no need to put labels on fans. A fan is a fan. I welcome new fans. The more the better I say.

Totally agree with you RemDawg!

Remdog, the other thought is that Boston not only downgraded to Bay but, they did not bother to match moves with the Angels. I believe that might be the start of the proverbial nail. I am hoping we can do something with the waivers. Take a look at how many losses we had in July and couple that with how many total hits. Also how many walks and runs have been given up by our pitching recently? I know our team will bounce back but, sometimes new blood and additions to the lineup create a certain spark that is much needed in Boston. ...View More

We do not need to match moves with the Angels. We need to worry about our division. The Rays and Yankmees aren't that good! Our current team IMO should be able to win the American League East. Then we'll worry about the "halos"

good point, Knarfy. One day at a time and we'll all be fine. Anyone who thinks we're going under because of trading Manny, well, I can definatly inderstand how you feel but I also KNOW that you're wrong. Time has a way of settling disagreements, of healing wounds. This time, is OUR time! GO SOX!!

In my opinion, we all knew, for several years, quite well that Manny Ramirez had significant character flaws. You knew it when he didn’t spend time with kids suffering from cancer, you knew it when he contributed nothing to the neighborhood where he was raised, you knew it when he couldn’t spend a minute consoling wounded veterans, you knew it when he would take days (in 2005/2006 weeks?) off with mysterious ailments, you knew it when he was sent to the plate to pinch hit and took three pitches right down the can against Mariano Rivera, you knew it when he complained of sore knees and an MRI revealed no visible damage to either knee yet Manny was too sore to play against Hernandez in Seattle and Chamberlain in Boston, you knew it when he assailed Red Sox Management with fabricated claims of being mis-treated, you knew it when he demanded repeatedly to have his options renewed or be traded, you knew it when …. Well you surely got it by now… and over the years, there are dozens of other instances (remember he couldn’t play but was seen in a bar in NY with Enrique Wilson?) … Yet, this immature, selfish man suffering from lack of brain development entertained us and helped the Red Sox to win… Yet it left a horrible taste in our mouths tolerating Manny ‘the clown’ Ramirez who exhibits many of the traits of a child suffering from attachment disorder. . ...View More

I would like to add that, while I greatly appreciate Manny's contributions to our team over the years, his attitude was poisoning our team. We need to clear the air and play ball. We will never replace that great 3-4 combo in the lineup. But we can still win this thing, and the fans are still there for the team. I can't imagine Yaz, Tony C, Jim Rice, Trot, or many others, even when they were playing for non-contending teams, ever pulling the kind of things that Manny pulled. Joe Torre will have to arrange the feng shui in the dugout for Manny, Dr. Charles Steinberg will play the guitar for him (sorry, Remdawg, NOT air guitar this time), D-Lowe will tell him the best places to find sushi, and everything will work out. I wish him the best. By his asking to stay at the last minute and PROMISING that he would BEHAVE, he virtually admitted that he had been tanking. I just hope that those games we lost during his little snits don't cost us the division in the long run. LET'S GO, RED SOX!!! ...View More

Knarfy is right here, winning the AL East is the first step in getting to the post-season...and it won't be easy for the team.I can be done, but with a much harder & longer road that it's been done in previous years. I also think that Remdawg's intent with this blog/post was to help us say goodbye to Manny and sooth the wounds for some that are still open...not to generate outright hate & bashing of him by some. ...View More

Ah, LisaMarie. Sorry to share the bad news. But we stopped being a 'family' when they started charging us for the privilege. Now I not a member, just a fan. That being said, I will miss Manny, and thank him for the memories. Wish him well. Go Bay!

I will miss Manny. I know he did bring it on himself and it is hard to figure why it happened so suddenly when he seemed so happy all year, but I still love Manny. I did get mad at him for not running to first base, etc, but I still love the guy. I was never as excited as I was when I saw him hit his 500th HR in Baltimore. Luckily with MLB Extra Innings I can also watch the Dodger games and see Manny. Good luck Manny. Keep on being Manny and don't cut the hair. Hey Torre, it's only hair, get over it, it is beautiful and he should be able to keep it. ...View More

Manny, #99, gave the Dodgers his first home run number 511. It really was hard to watch (http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200808023244668&c_id=la) but like a lovesick puppy, I keep checking in at Dogers.com. I'll miss him; even while I 100% agree that if he wanted to leave, well, he had to go. Jerry's comments match my own thoughts. Thank you.

My Son and I were speculating that Manny was following the directions of his agent throughout this mess. Even if that's true it's hard to figure the atitide and the comments. He must have known how disruptive he was being and his teammates didn't deserve that nor did we. At the end of the day it was all about the money and we need to realize that it is in fact "The Show". I hated to see him ago but am already a huge Jason Bay fan. Once again Theo shows us why he's the best in the business. ...View More

If you'll bear with me, I'll try to give you my humble perspective. I mean well. I just performed "Amazing Grace" for a neighbor and friend's 12-year old daughter - a tough little trooper and soccer goalkeeper who drowned while there were three lifeguards on watch. That's loss. That's tragedy. We all loved watching and reading about Manny. Now he's in LA, but he's still alive, and we can tank and trash his legacy, or we can do what doesn't come naturally and be the fans we are supposed to be - we can give him the benefit of the doubt, thank him for seven great years, and we can sincerely wish him the best in LA. Whatever caused Manny to become abusive toward his team, umpires, and ultimately, his community, it seems obvious that Manny had some need that was not being met. That need could be something that is critical to his culture and essential being, or it could have been just the need to move. There's a phenomena in professional sports I'll call the "Big Kid Syndrome". The "kid" grows up like Pavlov's dog; he is rewarded with affection based upon his performance. A significant part of him never matures. I'm no psychologist, but wasn't part of Manny the 8-year old at the birthday party? Isn't part of Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds the kid who just can't be wrong, because everyone told them they were pleasing the gods? Whatever need Manny had, maybe being closer to the Latino community in LA will help him grow as a person, maybe it will get him back in touch with some basics. I can almost guarantee that Manny's personal needs are closer to being met in Los Angeles than they were in Boston. What matters now is how we handle it - if we let him know that we are thankful and we wish him our best, we will be a long way into getting back what we lost. ...View More

Thank You Jerry, that's the word I was looking for ... "Manny being MANICAL." All this wierdo stuff he did these past weeks was Clearly NOT the "Manny being Manny" as we would say of his past pranks and ways. Yes two to Tango, but there's 3 sides to all this. I guess I feel a little more sad than just "fun while it lasted" but as much of a Manny fan as I've always been it was clear by his behavior in the last few weeks that things had gone way over the top. The "Red Sox don't deserve me" comment really got to me personally. I'll miss him although I'm thrilled with Jason Bay and his professional attitude and great play so far! ...View More

It's not like we won't be able to see Manny's funny stuff in LA on Sportscenter...Manny's offense will be missed but it was already gone before he was traded because he was not playing up to his ability. Time to move on and win another W.S.

nicely put rem, I will miss seeing Manny and wish him the best, he was a force but latley a disruptive force and that is to much for a team to tolerate, It is nice to see a new team player with a professional attitude Jason will help spark the team back to the top in the AL east. Thanks for all the memories Manny.

It's just sad that people feel the need to run his name into the ground in order to make themselves feel better about the trade. There should still be some respect for who he is as a player and what he's brought to this team over the years. Regardless of how it ended.

He sure was entertaining to watch and a great player when he actually applied himself but that was few and far between. I thank him for helping us win 2 world championships and for entertaining red sox nation for as long as he did. The past few weeks leading up to his trade were unexcuseable. He didn't wanna play cause his knee hurt..well the sox sent him to get an m.r.i. on his knee. But what Manny didn't know going into that appointment was not only was he there to get an m.r.i. on his knee, but he also got scans of both knees, elbows & shoulders. Guess what?!? THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM!!! From what I heard Manny was none to happy that the front office didn't tell him in advance of these tests and it added to Manny's displeasure with the team. So long Manny and thanks for the memories and don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out ...View More

Brace yourselves, Sawxheads. Yes, Manny's over in the other league, and we have a solid replacement in Jason Bay. But, as I said - BRACE YOURSELVES. Don't be surprised to see Manny in pinstripes next year -- going against the Sox 17 times....

Manny said it exactly right. "They are tired of me and I am tired of them". Could the fact that Theo has been trying to get rid of him since 2003 have finally sent Manny to the brink? Best of luck Manny! The real bad part of this is that I have to stay up till 10:00 just to start watching watching your games. Meanwhile, GO SOX!

Its hard to watch Manny go - he was something - to write about and read about. Kind of like Derek Sanderson with the B's in the 70's. Thank God Boston is the locus of the greatest sports teams in the nation. We can afford to give Manny a free pass.

I disagree. I don't think that Manny absolutely had to go. Maybe he wanted to, though. He seems very relaxed and content right now. I've been hearing a lot more in the past couple of days within the media about how the Sox always seem to twist the tables on their outstanding players when their time is running down. I am beginning to wonder....Aside from all that stuff though, I do believe that the Red Sox downgraded their team quite a bit. Sure, they're winning right now, but tougher teams are up ahead. Ortiz is going 1-5 amd Manny's hitting home runs in Hollywood. And I will not hesitate to say that the Sox, since Manny's trade, have become quite boring. I've been watching Dodger games for a week now, but only flipping the channel to check on the Boston score, and that's unusual. Used to be you couldn't get me off of the couch when the Sox were on. Lot different now....I love Manny and and he brings great things to the sport of baseball. ...View More
