My Bad …
October 17, 2008
After about 25 innings of tortuous baseball at Fenway Park, the Red Sox, like the Phoenix, rose from the ashes. Many articles have commented on the fact that this was the greatest playoff comeback in 79 years and the second greatest of all time. No doubt, such references refer mathematically to the number of runs involved in the comeback.
Last night’s game was more than that.
The Red Sox appeared to be emotionally bankrupt, dejected, depressed and otherwise toasted. Leading into the seventh inning I wouldn’t have been surprised if most of them had already chartered Gulf Stream G650’s to go on vacation to places we've never heard of.
They were dead!
Then as if by some form of divine intervention, a proverbial lightning bolt stunned the team and fans alike. It was nothing short of astonishing. So much so, that we already were preparing the script for the post-game, post mortems. We were debating what changes had to be made for next season ... etc. etc. etc.
We of little faith!
Over the last few years our comebacks are the stuff of legend in Red Sox Nation. Debatably, last night could be put right at the top of the list. It would be the crowning jewel if we were to ……… (I dare not jinx them so you fill in the blanks here).
Shame on me for doubting.
