Pudge vs. Teky
February 16, 2008

So I'm bored, and putting off homework so I decided to take a look at (in my opinion) the two best catchers in Red Sox history. Strictly Stats - Teky - 1063 Hs, 148 HRs, .267 BA, 611 RBIs .350 OBP, .447 SLG in 11 seasons Pudge - 2356 Hs, 376 HRs, 1330 RBIs, .269 BA, .341 OBP, .457 SLG in 24 seasons As you can see their numbers have the possibility of being pretty equal if Teky can stay healthy and play for 24 years. Pudge has about double the hits, and RBIs that Tek does. I credit that to the longevity of his career. Tek only edges him in OBP and only by a couple of points, while Fisk has a better BA by only a couple of points. Strictly Awards - Teky - 2 Time All Star - 03, 05, Gold Glove 05, Silver Slugger 05 Pudge - 11 Time All Star, 72' ROY, 72' Gold Glove, 3 Time Sliver Slugger Pudge wins this one hands down. World Series Stats - Teky - .250 BA, 7 RBIs, 0 HRs, .303 OBP, .357 SLG Pudge - .240, 4 RBIs, 2 HRs, .406 OBP, .480 SLG Teky leads in only BA and RBIs Intangibles - Now I don't know how well Pudge manages a pitching staff because I wasn't alive to see him handle our boys but I know Teky does a great job, one of the best I have ever seen. Both are Yankee killers, Pudge made Thurman Munson his bi&*h and we all know about Gay-Rod. Pudge has the '75 Game 6 home run (which in my opinion is one of the single greatest plays in RS history). Teky has two World Series rings. That is what did it for me, Teky is on my dream team because I have grown up watching him, He is a great catcher, and the leader of this team Don’t get me wrong I love, love, love Pudge, but I have never seen him play live and the two World Series rings are priceless. Much Respect, Long live RSM R/L/F!

Darkhalf..
Im torn as well. I have pudge staring on my Dreamteam because a catcher that withstands 24 years of Major League duty is un-heard of!

There are many aspects of the game that are not defined by statistics and production. In of those aspects is handling a pitching staff. To me this is one of the most important aspects of the game because without a good catcher there is a gap in the leadership. During their careers both Pudge and Teck have shown they have the intangibles that are required to be in this conversation. That in itself is an incredible accomplishment. Since I have seen both play in their prime I can hon estly say it is a toss up.....the stats say onne thing but the EYE'S have it!!!!Nice blog!!!! ...View More

A pitching staff is made up of a cast of characters( being a pitcher myself in HS)who all have their own personalities, the catcher has to be able to understand all those personalities and make them perform (to the best of their ability) one or two days a week. Both Pudge and Teck had the qualities needed for that job......make your judgment based more on the record of their respective pitching staffs over the length of their careeers with the sox. I myself have a hard time choosing between them because I have had the privilege of witnessing what both of them can do and have done....Fisk's memories are just as good as those two Teck rings I can not choose!!!! ...View More

I like really really REALLY like this blog.. I love them both, I always put Pudge on my Dream Team because when I saw Tek take Arod out... well that was awesome but it also reminded of Pudge yelling at Dion Sanders "If you don't play it [the game] f'n right, I'm going to kick your ass right here." BUT THE INFAMOUS 1973 brawl between Thurmon Munson and Pudge...10 minute bench clearing slug fest .. only equaled ..kinda..to Tek in Arods face..kinda.....and who can forget the Pudge 'n' Lou Piniell epsisode in '76 ..this is why I always say that Tek took a page outta Pudges vs Yankee playbook.. They BOTH deserve recognition.. They both turned their teams around. Different circumstances , Different results..Tek's spark just happened to be the spark to a ring... ...View More

They are both amazing, and what I like about the both of them is the way they work with pitchers to help them develop. In watching Tek during the Buchholz no-hitter, I have to say that I don't think Clay would have been able to do it without the rock of Gibralter behind the plate. I had forgotten about the Deion Sanders episode, Psycho, but it was PRICELESS, now that you reminded me of it! (Deion was with the Albany-Colonie Yankees out here when Jeter and Bernie Williams were also on the team--I used to see him on my way to work [he had been partying all night long while the rest of us working stiffs were sleeping], driving his tricked-out Maxima with gold wheels and always with a "babe" in the passenger seat. I LOVED IT when Pudge got into his face--what an UGLY FACE it was, too! LOL) Pudge and Lou Piniella in 1976 was also classic. I have NEVER liked Piniella, for that reason. But again, getting back to the pivotal role that each one has played in pitcher development...They were both essentially pitching coaches, much more than some of the other catchers that I have seen over time. These guys were/are the true leaders and set the inspirational tone for the teams. I can't choose. Wanda~~RSM ...View More

Tek is our captain. Pudge is a warrior. I'm with NC on this one. You can't go wrong with either of them. Gotta love Tek's 2 rings! GO SOX!!! REPEAT IN '08!!!

I think we're fortunate to live in this era, where most of us have had the privilege of seeing the two best catchers in Red Sox history... Pudge and Tek. We've seen other GOOD ones -- Elston Howard in his twilight was still great; Rich Gedman was pretty good; Jerry Moses comes to mind as another good backstop. But, all in all, we've seen the best two catchers the Sox have had in their 108-year history. And don't forget - These ARE the "Good Old Days" we will be telling our grandchildren about. ...View More

Greg, you are so right. Elston Howard was the only Yankee who was EVER polite to the Red Sox fans in the 1960s, and then we had the good fortune to have him join the Sox. Jerry Moses was a consistent catcher, but didn't have the leadership qualities shown by Tek and Pudge. Gedman was pretty good as well. But for leadership, pitching development, and "HEART," Tek and Pudge can't be beat. You are SOOO right about the fact that these are the good old days we'll be telling our grandchildren about. And will THAT ever be exciting! ...View More
