Manny wont 'play ball' with LA
February 27, 2009

You know, you probably could have guessed that Manny would reject their offer (AGAIN!) but this time, it could be for a number of reasons.

The first could be that although the millions offered are in round numbers (easy to add), it may be too complicated an offer to make sense to him. First ya got yer deferrments...then a possible option for another year and at a different amount ALtogether...   I'm sure that he just is trying to wrap his mind around all these millions that LA is talking about and can't seem to keep them straight. ... I mean, should he hustle ALL the time or would that mean that he would be setting an even higher bar for himself to constantly raise?? Or perhaps, he should ease up a bit, every once in awhile, so as to not be 'expected' to perform EVERYtime, thereby making him the instant MVP EVERY time he delivers...hmmm. There are so many ways to go with this.

Then when you have all these "possible' options that "could" or "could not" happen...AGGGHHHH! I understand why he is homeless as of now.

Still another could be that because his grandmother is dying  (again) and he wants to be with her but doesn't want the hassle of showing up late for spring training again (you know ...like LAST time!) so he's bidding his time while juggling his visiting hours.

But, alas...we all know LA will cave in and remove the 'offensive' things, thereby guarenteeing Manny a set salary, regardless of how his performance is on OR off, the field.

And I don't think the Yankees have an interest in him. I think they did for a short time, early on but have since blown that hotdog stand. Maybe Manny wishes he did things differently back then but I doubt it. He may still be deluding himself into thinking that he WILL be a Yankee but I really think he's happy in the National league, not sharing the spotlight with anyone, being the biggest fish in a smaller pond.

What eventually happens (WHEN it happens), no one can say for sure but I do believe it will be entertaining. For all the talk about how he just wanted to play ball, did you ever think he'd be among the last to suit up....by CHOICE???

Scoobs, who cares about Manny? I hope he doesn't get another offer and sits out the entire season.

Deferred compensation is NOT the same as straight compensation. Not to get political, but both Manny and Boras also realize that with the national and California state deficits, tax rates may rise markedly in the next several years.

So .. he would not only have to wait on the money -- he may have to pay higher taxes on it if it's spread out.

I am hoping that the Dodgers say ok, last offer, screw you. It's what he deserves. Sadly though he will probably get them to cave as they think they need him.

section 15...thank you for that bit of reason..I hadn't considered that. Still doesn't change my mind though..I figure he made his bed. Bad timing, on his part. And Knarfy... I CARE ABOUT MANNY!!!! Dont YOU????? LOL!! Honestly though, he still HAS remarkable talent and that cant be overlooked, as hard as he trys to make it for us all. I'm just interested to see what happens.

Rocky = No. You (generally) pay state income tax to the state where you earned it. People who live in NH but work in MA pay MA state income tax.

Scoobs = deferred money is worth less, because it cannot be invested until you receive it. Plus there are inflation concerns. Plus the top (fed) tax rate TODAY in the US is 36%. It will likely go up in the future.

I'm with Knarfy on this. I gave him my support in his Sox uniform, but as a human being Manny sucks. His hitting skills aside, that does not make up for his lack of decency. Some may argue that what a player does outside the game is irrelevant, but I think it goes to his overall character. When he can't be "bothered" to go see cancer stricken children, who most by the way, want to see Manny, I couldn't care less what happens to him at this point. I would find it amusing to see him with no team at the start of the season. No disrespect to those that still may support him. ...View More

"Boras' proposal is for two years at $45 million with all the money paid over the course of two years. The Dodgers' last proposal, rejected by Ramirez on Thursday, was for the same length and dollar figure, but deferred without interest over five years." Would you work for 2 years if your employer was going to take 5 years to pay you? I wouldn't either, know the facts before you chastise someone!

Cali - not sure if you're talking to me but if you are, I wasn't aware of the exact deferrment period nor do I feel I needed to be in order to have a feeling on this...simply beCAUSE he is Manny. Knowing what I know about Manny to this point, I feel like I can offer my opinion. The economy is down, all teams are cutting where they can. Whether or not this is the right thing to do in Manny's case, is irrelevant. But if Manny just wants to 'play ball' as he has so often said and spring training has alREAdy started and he has NO home, I'd say he made his bed and now he has to live with it. If he weren't so self obsorbed and instead, out for the team he was playing on, he would have sealed a contract way up front....my point is that would just cramp his style because more than likely, he doesn't want to show up for spring training on time this year either. His kind of 'playing ball' isn't my kind. ...View More

The part of that offer that gets me is INTEREST FREE, since when in any business are loans set up interest free? So basically the smurfs want to borrow part of Manny's contract and use it to fund other operating costs for the team.

I dont see how him wanting to "play ball" can justify ANYONE, not just Manny, making that business decision. If he waits another week and someone gets injured in the WBC the Dodgers offer will get blown out of the water. He is smart and he is listening to Boras, they both want to get paid!

CaliGrow..
...and like you said, if he isnt under contract they can not expect and/or fine him for NOT being in camp.

My take does not go to whether or not this is a fair offer but rather, if Manny really did love to just 'play ball' he never would have put himself in this position. As it stands now, he has no home and this is the best offer, thus far. That should NOT be the case for someone as talented as he is. He is now paying the price for doing alot of stupid things. It will be the baseball fan that looses out by not being able to see him play. Financially, I think Manny will be ok but I don't see how this will not stain his outlook and contracts, going forward. They have him over a barrel. They may reallly really need him but they will be here for years to come...Manny, not so much. ...View More
