February 17, 2009

Well ok, I'll put it all on the table, before the reg season starts and take whatever feedback you have to offer me.

I am amazed at the ones that can quote stats. Usually this would take an interest in the sport &  much time (daily) and voila, you have the current stats at your fingertips.

Well, I DO have an interest in the sport..MORE than an 'interest'. It's in MY blood too. Do you know the one hang up b4 getting married and moving (from MA) to WI was that I get Direct TV with the sports package? THAT was my pre-nup! I'd say that is more than an interest. Our first DATE was a Red Sox game. Again, more than an interst. My dream proposal would have been at Fenway because it is so me..but that wasn't to be the case. I have flown form WI to MA JUST to purchase lottery tkts to the WS ring and those same tckts are framed, on my wall. Think it's in my blood yet?

Time...oh yeah, time...I spend just about every game in front of the tv, home and away..no matter the time. I haven't gone to bed before they're over EVAH..even when they're on the west coast and doing poorly. I used to chk in to this site everyday for the news and rumors. When I visit my mother, I collect all the newspaper clippings, articles that she has saved for me (she doesn't remember to save much anymore or if she has saved it, wouldn't remember why or where it is...alzheimers).  I've listened to my brothers and my dad for years and since I grew up wanting to be just like them, I paid attn when they spoke.

But halfway thru the off season last year, I had difficulty recalling Mike Lowells name, couldn't think of who our ss was and at times, have difficulty recalling the full name of Manny Rameriz and Big Papi. I look at the big picture that I have framed over the table and I see the faces but...Then...who plays 2nd base?..or Centerfield? I can 'see' past players in my head but it takes me quite awhile to think of their names if I ever can.

I'm not sure what this is due to..I had menengitis/encephalitis (yeah the kind you die from) when I was a 10 and have been on anti-seizure meds ever since. Maybe it's from the epilepsy or maybe its from the drugs. Maybe it's from both or maybe it's something totally different. I have no idea.

But I just wanted to get this straight, BEFORE we start the season:

I do not think of myself as any LESS of a fan because I can't remember stats, nor do I think that the type of fan I am, can be measured by ANYone else..  I have read all sorts of blogs for this past season where that has been the measure stated by some and agreed by most.

Some may even call me a 'pink hat' though I've been a fan for as long as I can remember (ohh, poor choice of words there...ok, since grade school..early/mid 60's to one degree or another and a diehard fan around the time I graduated HS) .

Now, is this baseball related..YES!! I want to be able to come to a web site, discuss the Sox and not be denegrated because I may not know as much as you when the fact is that I probably DO. Do you know how irritating that is??? Knowing in your head that the knowledge is 'somewhere' but the 'recall' man is asleep at the switch ??

Now I don't think anyone will understand this..I have a hard time understanding myself, these days. I only wanted you guys/gals to think before you go spouting off about how much of a fan you are because of the knowledge you posses. True, you ARE a serious fan..... but so am I.

You're right, you DO NOT have to know stats to be a diehard fan. I can't name the record for the 1987 season or the starting second baseman for the 1982 season, but I can tell you the whole starting lineup for the 09 season & I can tell you the AL EAST standings for the 04 season. & in about 15 years I'll forget that stuff, but I'll know it for that year. It's not about knowing stats, it's about loving your team. ...View More

I am not a stat head either and I do also have trouble remembering years past unlike my brother that can tell you the starting line-up from almost any year from 1967 on. I guess too many years in germany and not seeing them (sox) everyday caused that. Even after moving here in 1992 (KY) I hardly see them on TV can't afford to pay for all that it takes to see them so I rely on MLB web site and listen to all games via internet radio I jove Castiglianbo and OBrien b etter than I do listening to the comedy duo of Remy and Orsillo. Some may question my loyalty because if I get upset at a player I will say it, Not try to sugar coat why they didn't get a clutch hit or whatever. Anyway I am with ya not a stat head here either. Just a Red Sox Fan. ...View More

April is..
Eh, I'm not much of a stat head either, some things I remember well, other things, not so much. For example, I don't remember our 1987 record but Jerry Remy was the second baseman in 1982. But on a side note, we do have access to the internet which means we have access to all sorts of stats, and I like to exploit that from time to time.

I'm not into the numbers as much as the history of the game. I also like background info on the players and *what makes them tick* so to speak. I love the lore of the game!

The Poet..
I don't think it takes any die hard love to remembr stats... just a good memory and time enough to waste on obscure things. Excuse me for being too busy supporting my family and raising my children to tell you exactly what Nomar's batting average was in 1999. Scoobs you're a wonderful fan and a fantastic person. Everyone who knows you knows that. If someone has to question your fandom to make themselves feel important, they are the ones who need to get a life! LGRS! ...View More
