Mirabelli: a GM strategy
elmedius wrote this 2 months ago on |
let me go ahead and preface this by saying: im fine with the decision to cut mirabelli. to me, its sound business. the sox need to start getting someone ready to catch in fenway park for years to come. thats not going to happen with doug in the way. the mirabelli/wakefield combo was a special one and ill miss it, and while i hope tek is behind the plate for the next 50 years... thats not going to happen. so, good move theo. (and i rarely say that)...

Beckett on the WHEATIES box!
elmedius wrote this 3 months ago on |
so im cruising the isles of my local grocery store, and maybe this is old news to you... but Josh Beckett is on the cover of the wheaties box!
basically i freak out
im not in mass so the people in the cereal isle are all "that guy must really like getting 11% of his dietary fiber from his breafast! he's friggin' nuts" now, Ive never been in a situation where ive seen an adult get so excited about a cereal box, so i dont know how id have reacted...

Yahoo! fantasy sports and the sox: is justice served? (by the way, join my league)
elmedius wrote this 3 months ago on |
let me preface this by saying, yes, ive created a yahoo fantasy league specifically for you here on sawxheads. is this a shamless promotion? probably...
ive set it up in yahoo: "the league to end all leagues" since its set up to be pretty hardcore
is id # 53121 ..... password: redsoxits an 18 -20 possible team league with 10 field positions and 10 pitching positions and 5 bench spots... a total of 18 points available per week 9 for position players,...

baseball: of the simulated variety (fantasy)
elmedius wrote this 3 months ago on |
as pitchers, catchers, and overacheivers start arriving for spring training.... it got me thinking about the other baseball that starts to warm up in spring as well...
now i dont have any kids, so little league means nothing to me which means that leaves me with two basic options... fantasy and video games.
as far as video games go, i was a big fan of EA, i still like the college game they have... but its not the same, i wont play 2K games... probably because they repeatedly put yanks on...

time for some 5th outfielders to move on
elmedius wrote this 4 months ago on |
it appears more than likely that coco crisp will remain with the red sox for at least the start of the 08 season... meaning the 4th outfield spot will belong to either him or ellsbury...
so why exactly are guys like eric hinske and bobby kielty not trying to move on and pick up with some other team? sure i know boston is the place to be, but with brandon moss in house with a contract.... do these guys think they really have a shot at playing time?
for one the sox announced they were...

Sox vs Tigers: continued the pitching
elmedius wrote this 4 months ago on |
so after the tigers took a 6-3 lead offensively in my head to head position battle between the sox and tigers i took some time off and eventually got around to the pitching. here it goes: i chose these 4 stats because they are the important ones to me in determing a pitchers effectiveness moreso than wins and strikeouts.... ERA, WHIP, OBA, and K/BB
i chose to follow each teams respective depth chart per their official websites with one exception... as im sure youll notice in just a...

i wasnt scared of the Tigers, now i am... just a little.
elmedius wrote this 5 months ago on |
I wasnt really that concerned with the Detroit Tigers... not even after their blockbuster trade with the Marlins... but after listening to a lot of talk i decided to do some research. i chose to compare what each teams official website had as their starter at each position in 4 categories that i feel give an accurate description of their play regardless of how high or low powered the offense they play on may be. equalizers more or less.
i chose:
on base percentage...

clemens and the hatred?

come on guys.... whats with the extreme clemens hating?
yeah i know roger clemens played for the yankees (do you know the story of how he left the sox?) ... and i know that theres a good chance he used steroids (do you think the guys on the mitchell list are REALLY the ONLY ones who used anything?) and sure he's got a monter sized ego... dont 4,000 plus strikeouts and & 7 CY YOUNG awards give him a reason to be so cocky? johan santana has won 2...

sleep apnea and the state of the pen.
elmedius wrote this 5 months ago on |
word on the streets is that craig hansen is undergoing surgery to correct what is considered by some the reason for his inflated ERA.... sleep apnea. what is sleep apnea? well, its basically when you stop breathing for a couple of seconds while your asleep... meaning: you dont sleep well. is this the reason he's slid from "closer of the future" to near obscurity? i guess we will find out soon enough. id imagine not being able to get a good nights...

john henry and the money?
elmedius wrote this 6 months ago on |
with ticket prices at fenway going up again for '08 (approximately 9%), one has to wonder: whats that all about? the red sox already have the most expensive tickets in baseball by far. sure theres been rennovations and additions, but ticket prices have gone up every year since henry bought the sox in '02.....whats the real motive? does john henry and co really care about baseball? the fans? or is it the money?
take the field boxes: in'97 they were $26, in...

lowell: back up plans taking shape?

dont get me wrong, i want mike lowell in a sox uniform next year. more than most of you... im just a realist and i dont always get what i want beleive it or not so ive been looking into the sox backup plans in case a deal with lowell falls through. theres of course guys like miguel cabrera and troy glaus who may or may not be available.... but id rather not focus on guys like that. they require prospects, and lots of them. im not a fan of watching prospects go,...

are sox primed to take over #1 payroll?

with the yankees falling apart before our very eyes, its hard not to smile and enjoy every ****ing minute of the patheticness of it all.... but what (other than absolute al east dominance in the future) does this mean for the sox? are the red sox about to become the new evil empire in the eyes of america?
why?
the yankees payroll should be shrinking signifigantly and very soon! the yankees could or already have lost all of these high dollar players this offseason... .a-rod,...

i like the chances

heading into the ALCS, i have to say that regardless of how hot the indians have been, and how bad they made the yankees look... i still really like the sox chances to get to the series again.
the indians bats were not that impressive in the yankees series. not against anyone one that was pitching well at least. they did however get hits when it mattered... the indians drove in over 10 runs in that series with two outs! but, thats against a yankees staff that...

is francona's job safe?
elmedius wrote this 8 months ago on |
is francona's job safe? what kind of question is that? we just won the division! not so fast i say, there have been a lot of successful managers let go after terrific seasons. the sox have let 3 pretty good ones go over the past 12 years and it leads to a precedent that francona might not be with us next year if things dont go right in the playoffs. take a look at some abbreviated history and at least consider the possibilities.

gm profile: theo epstein 11/25/02-present

my first look at: who will take the field in '08?

with everyones eyes on the future of red sox pitching right now, and rightly so (who couldnt be excited knowing that beckett, matsuzaka, buchholz, and lester should all be with the sox rotation for years to come and guys like papelbon and delcarmen in the pen?) i thought id take a quick look at what we have to look forward to in the field.
the log jam in outfield: with veterans manny ramirez and j d drew most likely with the club through 2009 at the minimum (i see manny staying, and...

aim AT the monster drew
elmedius wrote this 8 months ago on |
i just spent the last 30 minutes or so looking through drew's hitting charts over his career. he has always been a straight pull hitter. id say 90% of his homers are to right, the other 10% go to center, the same with his singles, and triples.
he for his career has apparently always grounded out to first quite a bit too, so this year is no new phenomenom. whats interesting is that during his best year (2004 with atlanta) he shows more power to center and has the one homer ive been able...

Tek is sox top clutch player this year
elmedius wrote this 9 months ago on |
there has been a lot of talk about the sox not performing well in the clutch this year, so i decided to see for myself if it was true. i decided to gage clutch success by checking out the stats that 10 red sox players had in mlb.com's split stat of "late innings of close games". this is what i found out, (stats are current as of 8/22/07)
i ranked the players by on base percentage because i feel like baserunners win ball games. hopefully my format makes it easy...

the WMP trade and Chris Carter

according to mlbtraderumors.com the wily mo pena trade was a three team affair. The red sox will reportedly receive 25 yr old 1st baseman chris carter from arizona. the player to be named later will reportedly now be coming to arizona from washington and is expected to be a relief pitcher.
"Carter is a respectable return for Pena. According to Baseball America, he's below average on defense but has the bat speed to become a middle of the order...

"Yesterday, third baseman mike lowell confirmed that his agent has had "casual conversations" with the Red Sox about a contract extension. Lowell, 33, is hitting a solid .304/.355/.489 on the season.
If he reaches free agency, Lowell would be on many teams' radar. There are really only four third baseman out there: Lowell, Alex Rodriguez, Mike Lamb, and Pedro Feliz. Someone might give Lamb a look in a...

so what do you think are the chances of bringing carlos pena back? (apparently a bad move to let him go) he calls the boston area his u.s. hometown, would add some more dominican flair to the team, oh and claimed to love being with the sox, a dream come true hitting the walk off for the sox at fenway.
could send youk back to third, and add some real pop in the five spot in the order. i dont think he has a long term deal with the d-rays.
what do you think?

The way i see it he has proven he belongs in the rotation and tavarez heads back to the pen while we continue to wait for minds to be made up about lester.. with a rotation next year looking something like
beckett, dice, lester, wakefield, gabbard.
it looks nice having two lefties in the rotation and when wakefield departs we add in bucholz....
