john henry and the money?

with ticket prices at fenway going up again for '08 (approximately 9%), one has to wonder: whats that all about?  the red sox already have the most expensive tickets in baseball by far.     sure theres been rennovations and additions, but ticket prices have gone up every year since henry bought the sox in '02.....whats the real motive?  does john henry and co really care about baseball? the fans? or is it the money?

take the field boxes: in'97 they were $26, in '04 they were $75, in '08 they will be $125 according to the boston globe.  have things really inflated that much?  the average price for a family of 4 to attend a game at fenway next year is $313!

"We need revenue to fuel the vision that we have, and the vision is for a competitive, entertaining, winning team year in and year out - I say winning, I don't necessarily mean winning the World Series - and to preserve, protect, enhance, improve Fenway Park," president/CEO Larry Lucchino said yesterday in a conference call. "In addition, to restock our minor league system is the gasoline that makes the car go in those three directions."

yeah that makes sense, and sure im happy the sox are winning, dominating actually.  couldnt be happier about that... just i liked it better when I could afford to attend more than a handful of games.  going to fenway has always been special, but for my family it means sitting down and planning for it  financially... other than it just being a vacation its potentially a life changing experience.  ive got to eat peanut butter, ramen, and toast for a month to justify it.  hell, i could get the whole season, 162 games, on cable for the price of one game live with my wife. (yes im out of market, and nesn range)  ive had to choose going to see the sox over getting a new larger tv!  (the sox are keeping me out of the wonderful world of HD even)  ill take the sox over a HD tv any day... but should i have to?

when henry and werner bought the sox in '02 it was for $380 mil... in '06 they were worth $617 mil http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/33/330700.html  i havent been able to figure out what they are worth now, post another CHAMPIONSHIP! but im sure henry could make at leas $250 mil selling them now.

that just has me thinking.  was that the purpose in the first place?  it had to be partially.  does he really care that those of us who have followed the sox for years cant afford to visit fenway anymore?  i dont think so.  i think he sees the fact that there are a thousand new people willing to take our places... 500 of them have more money of course.

the only positive (other than the winning of course) is that fenway is going to be in great condition for its 100th anniversary coming up.(it opened in 1912)  which means that there SHOULD be an allstar game in boston that year.  but how much are those tickets going to cost?

Yeah, Fenway has the most expensive seats but it also has the least amount of seats. I look at it like paying that extra money to have the best team and the most magical, amazing, and historical park in baseball.

Fenway doesn't have the least amount of seats anymore. Dolphins Stadium, PNC Park, Tropicana Field, and McAfee Colisseum all have less than Fenway's seating capacity........ But yeah, all JH wants is money , but as long as we're willing to fork it over to him, I think he'll own the team.

I don't know where you're getting you're information but the only park that is in the vicinity of being smaller than Fenway is PNC park at just over 38,000. All the other parks you mentioned have a capacity of at least 40,000. And who the hell wants to see the Pirates play anyway, that's why their tickets aren't $125. Supply and demand.

I often hear the comments "all dem millionaires, dem tickets is too high if you can get 'em, and look at Kansas City where dey get ten bucks or so to get in." A championship team costs money. To get that money, they have to collect it in ticket revenue and TV fees. Want to see a championship team? Pay the money for a Sox ticket (preferably at face value) .... otherwise, follow the Kansas City Royals or the Tampa Bay Dev- , uh, just Rays. And if your youngsters just want to see a game, there are the Spinners, Fisher Cats, PawSox, and teams in that independent league. I'll pay $90 for two IF Grandstand seats this year for every game we go to. I'd rather see a winning team. I saw this team, pre-1967. It wasn't a lot of fun to watch. This is better. These ARE the "good old days". Greg (section15)

I'd pay the money if I even had the chance to buy a ticket. These ARE the good old days, you're right, Greg, but I can't even seem to scare up a ticket or two. I went to a couple of games last year by myself, although you're never alone when you're in Fenway, since everyone around me was so friendly and we had a blast at the game. But I'd like to go with my kids to at least one game a year. I was able to get four tickets for one game in the 2007 season--September 10th! And now that StubHub has become the legal scalper for MLB, I'm sure the face value prices will look like Filene's Basement BAH-gains. I'd just like one game a year where I can drive to Boston and take in a game with my daughter, son, and daughter-in-law. Then I'll watch the rest of the games on the computer. Honest, is that asking too much? But there are people who go to the games just to be SEEN at the games, and they don't even LIKE baseball! That's what gets to me!! And supply and demand IS the reason why the prices escalate. It's like in "Field of Dreams"--"If you build it, they will come." "If you win it, they will buy--tickets, merchandise, etc.--and THEY WILL COME," no matter what size the park is.

takes $ to win these days- simple as that. MLB has gone from a 1B 'company' in annual revenues to a 6B one since Selig took over the reigns. Our favorite 'past time' the old game- is really a business, sad as that may be.

i guess you just have to know the right people to get the tickets, i hit 6 games last year & never paid more than $50 a ticket...some we even paid $25/ticket (SRO, but who cares?? i'd rather stand anyway) but i would still pay whatever i could afford just to go and see my boys play!!!! :) ps... tix go on sale SATURDAY baby...!!!!!!

As far as Lucchino and Henry I believe the Sox have the best clubhouse and not just because I am a diehard fan. I have met both of them on more then one occasion and I believe they are good to the fans. It does suck that it has become so expensive but the team has grown immensely and I dont blame all of that on the owner it was in the Sox fate.
