Mirabelli: a GM strategy
March 17, 2008

let me go ahead and preface this by saying:  im fine with the decision to cut mirabelli.  to me, its sound business.  the sox need to start getting someone ready to catch in fenway park for years to come.  thats not going to happen with doug in the way.  the mirabelli/wakefield combo was a special one and ill miss it, and while i hope tek is behind the plate for the next 50 years... thats not going to happen.  so, good move theo.  (and i rarely say that)

now, heres where the gm in me comes in.... say you are the new york mets or arizona diamondbacks... (just imagine your that unlucky)  now, youve recently traded away a good bit of your farm system for a top quality major league pitcher.  (haren, santana)

why wouldnt you sign mirabelli?(even if its to a minor league contract)  who knows if the sox are going to have to pull another cross country flight to get him back  to fenway to catch wakefield?  what are the sox going to have to do?  give you whatever you want as far as prospects go  thats right!  look at what san diego got for him last time.!

mirabelli isnt exactly a wallet breaker for most major league teams, plus he brings good stuff to the club house, has playoff experience,  is great defensively, and has a lot of experience for young catchers to feed off of.  plus theres that faint chance you get to restock your farm system or even mlb bullpen immediately if the sox decide they need him back.  its a relatively cheap gamble with a possible big payoff.

if you were another teams gm, why wouldnt you sign him?  it just makes sense.

I think most GMs realize we're not gonna sell the farm to get him back again this time. That was a one time deal. Josh Bard wasn't getting the job done, but Kevin Cash has shown he can catch the knuckleball. That being said I do think another team should sign him, but, hopefully, for the reason that they need a catcher and not for the chance to exploit the Sox later in the season. ...View More

i definitely hope it wont happen for a second time, but then again i never expected him to come back after the loretta trade. i think his days of making any kind of an impact on another teams mlb roster (as a player) are pretty much over. he'll make a great coach im sure. you definitely make the point that the chance of it happening are very slim, but if my farm system (assuming i had one) was weak and i had the money id take the chance. ...View More

There are also other ramifications here; Jason Varitek is 37 and approaching free agency. We saw that the Red Sox collapsed when he was out, injured, in 2006. Reliable catchers may have to be groomed, they're not readily available on the free agent market. Cash and/or Kottaris are the future and I think the move was painful - but -- necessary.

Mirabelli will not make a return to Boston. The logic suggesting this is flawed from the start. The roster will not allow a 200 hitter taking a roster spot for one appearance every five games.

Where did Mirabelli end up?

redsoxbernie, I don't think anyone is expecting Kevin Cash to be a big offensive player. I think he'll most likely be a 200 player taking a roster spot for one appearance every five games.

No, Cash is definitely not an offensive player, being a career .167 (redsox.com) hitter. I am torn between the Mirabelli deal, because as we all know, I am a huge fan of Doug. He could provide better offense and is a great defensive catcher for Wake, but overall, he isn't going to through guys out like Tek, and he is getting older. I just don't feel that safe that Cash is our back up. What has he proven, really? I would love to have another dramatic Doug return to Fenway, but I really think that ship has sailed. I hope he ends up as a coach somewhere so he can offer his knowledge to the up-and-comers. ...View More
