Clutch !!
July 6, 2008

Go to fullsize image Well yes its true we dropped one in the Bronx we could have won , but you didn’t think Rivera could pitch that bad for that long , yeah he plunked two batters and was missing the zone by a foot , but when he had to be tough he was , sometimes as Carl Yastrzemski  said you don’t lose the other guy beats you ! And after looking bad for much of the ninth Rivera became clutch , and lucky .

Its true we had our chances to win and what I find disturbing is lately we have been stranding a lot of runners . We need to get back that killer instinct, that ability to get tougher when we have runners in scoring position , that thing called clutch .

Maybe its just the toll this season has taken on the lads , with the trip to Japan and all, or maybe the loss of the large father contributes to our lack of clutch, or maybe we need to juggle the lineup a bit , something I think Tito is loathe to do , but all in all we have had a good first half., just not clutch ..

We had another good outing form the lad Masterson and the relief corps looked like they could handle the task at hand , yes rest will be good for this team . And after the break clutch may return , although some people even debate the existence of clutch I do not, I have seen clutch first hand , first with Yastrzemski and later with Papi , so here”s to clutch, may it return to us post haste, and may it remain til the championship is firmly in sox hands .

ps.. if you need to know the deffinition of clutch look it up , you'll find the picture of these two guys in the dictionary under clutch ,

clutch does exist !!

Some players can perform in the clutch and some can't. Lugo can't!

It's a damn shame that performing in the major leagues doesn't come as easy as bi&*hing cuz if it did we'd have us an undefeated team every year with a roster full of people ya only hear from after we lose a game. Keep the Faith; 14/09

∞Why N..
The bi&*hing only starts when a player continually underperforms! If can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

Then maybe try Dr Phil online if ya want people to listen to ya piss and moan.

Nice blog brother. It seems the Sox have always left a lot of men on, but you're right about that killer instinct. I'm still waiting for a glimpse. It'll happen.... a lot of baseball left this year.

As usual, another award winning blog;I say that The Reverend be placed on the Blogs All Star team as a starter. The killer instinct has been absent for some time now...could it be because they have the ability to bring the knock-out blow at any moment, therefore not putting anyone away when they should??? I also propose that "I'm A Believer", a great 60's pop hit by The Monkees,be given the treatment by The Reverend & adopted as RSN's song/mantra for the 2nd half of the year... ...View More

Preach on Rev! Clutch exists! Just not yesterday! If we win today and can take 3 out of 4 in their house, I'll be happy. That said, I hate giving a game away like we did yesterday!

there is no question in my mind . clutch deffinetly exsists . it's that point when you get the adrenaline flowing with the game on the line . the difference between making the best of the clutch and not , is being able to use the adrenaline to your advantage , control under pressure . that's why they do it and we watch in amazement . EVEN WHEN WE LOSE !!!

We need to capitolize on these runners, man. We've been leaving WAY too many runners stranded. Our bats need to wake up again. We're too damn good to have sorry numbers like this right now. Like Joe said, we handed them that game. Shouldn't have happened. We're WAY better than the Yanks will ever be.

Damn right brother. When you're staring in the face, an automatic out for almost a third of your lineup, something's gotta change. Either more time in the batting cage, or something. In Tek's case, I understand why he's not been hitting of late (illness twice, etc). Lugo...Well all I'm gonna say is Lowery, and leave it at that. Coco comes through at crazy times (Like when he and the youkster sent me out into nutty orbit in Cincinnati), but damn...let's face it bro. You're right. We NEED the Large Father back. And post haste. ...View More

You spelled Yastrzemski wrong. Twice. That's y-a-s-t-r-z-e-m-s-k-i. Now say 40 "Hail Jean Yawkey's" and don't let it happen again.

It will be nice to have Big Papi back but it ain't going to change the fact that Lugo ain't hitting and hasn't hit since putting the Red Sox uniform on. This is a Red Sox fansite. I ain't bad mouthing him at www.tampabayrays.com. I'm saying what I'm saying here in the house of the faithful because it's the truth. I cheer when he comes up to bat. But he ain't producing, on the field or at the plate. big Papi ain't going to help that. Big Papi's return is going to cost us either Youk, or Coco or Ellsbury at the plate. There's a whole lot of Red Sox with unsure futures. Will Manny get an extension? Will Tek get re-signed? Will Coco get traded? Will Schill ever pitch again? That has to weigh on a team, day in and day out. I welcome the allstar break. ...View More

To be honest didnt like the lugo signing when it happend I was a Cabrera guy, and I was quite happy with alex gonzalez dispite his lack of offense his defense evened the scales that said I don't believe the team will eat another shortstops contract were still paying for rent a wreck however Lowrie seems to be close but seems they want to wait til next year with him , changing horses in mid stream and all that, so until next year I will be pulling for lugo to get the job done hopefully he will respond ..although i do have my doubts ..I am however done with defending his ass ...View More

Honestly, when Lugo came up to bat I was kinda hoping he wouldn't get a hit. With all the crap he gets from the faithful he has no reason to come through in the clutch. He knows no one's pulling for him and even if he got the hit, he probably wouldn't get credit for it. It'd be 'wow, wasn't it great that Manny got hit by a pitch so Moss could score that run on Lugo's 'bloop' single.' It's just easier and more fun to focus on the negative than to find the positive. It's just that way with some players, no matter what they do. While other players can go through prolonged slumps and the fans still react as though they're hitting .400. ...View More

For the record...I'm not bashing Tek in my comment. Anyone who thinks that's the case, doesn't know me very well. Just putting that out there. The guys been sick, and a baseball season is the most grueling in all of sports. He'll get it back up, once he's recovered from the illnesses (Strep, etc).

i love this blog!! love it!! clutch DOES exist!! like on said, yaz and big papi, and in the absence of big papi...jd drew [our very own player of the month for june]...it is disappointing that in game tying [or potentially game winning] situations we cannot seem to pull anything out [this is twice now in one week where the same situation has happened...runners in scoring position in the 9th and the all-too-important tying run just didn't get a chance to touch the plate]...but i know that OUR "clutch" will return soon...and as soon as we have everyone well and off the DL and such, this team will DEFINITELY be a force to be reckoned with!! this is a great blog sir!! keep on preachin'!! MUCH RESPECT!! ...View More

Excellent point, Wayne. I've heard people compare football to baseball a lot in the aspect that if a football player breaks a finger or another apendage, he stays in the game. If a baseball player breaks a nail or gets an ingrown, he's on the DL. Here's the difference. A baseball season is 160+ games long. A typical football season, 16 games. Between games, a football player has a whole week (on average) to heal up and get back out there. A baseball player has to play on that for weeks or even months on end. IT's a lot harder for a baseball player to get over an illness or injury than it is for any other sport. Better to take it easy than to risk further injuring yourself. Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to add to Wayne's comment a little. ...View More

Not to mention that it's hard for a catcher to get a full cut on a ball. Their fingers are pretty much spent after the 4th batter. The velocity on a lot of these fastballs bends the fingers and takes a big toll in general. He does what he can by taping, but that only goes so far. Tek is a true warrior and cannot be left behind. He's carried this team in many ways his bat would never be able to live up to. He's an asset and will always be an asset. ...View More

Remember last season when people were giving up on JD? Now look at them! They're all for him this season! You never know, anything can happen. The All-Star break isn't even here yet. Maybe he'll have a break through after the All-Star break.

Ahhhhh good old 'CLUTCH'.... And yes, it will return, when the fire returns, when the light at the end of the tunnel nears, when the Yankees begin to threaten. I HATE that about the Sox but I must admit, it's what gets me pumped at the same time. BTW Hooligan, the tape on Teks fingers is for the pitcher..so he can see the fingers better. I've never heard that he does that to aid himself. Maybe you know something I don't?? pls share, if so. Great Blog. Love the subject matter.. It knows no stats (well, actually, it does but lets pretend) and depends on adrenaline just a bit more than talent. I LOVE that!!!!!! ...View More
