A Time For Reflection And Appreciation
May 25, 2008
Here we stand on the dawn of another Memorial Day. It is a time when we should take a moment and remember the reason we are able to enjoy anything at all. For me, it is due to every man in my family having worn a uniform of our fighting forces. From my grandfathers, one of which was an Army Mechanic and the other who was a Navy Mail Clerk. My uncle who was a Marine Corpsman in ‘Nam and my father who began his Naval career as a radioman on a sub, to becoming Navy S.E.A.L, to eventually working at the Pentagon carrying a ‘Football’. They are the reasons that I enlisted myself into the Army, first as a Russian Linguist and then as a Field Intel Soldier. My journey took me from Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. From there it was off to Ft. Huachuca, AZ, and then to Ft. Benning, GA where I had the privilege to learn how to jump out of ‘perfectly good airplanes’. (Anyone of you vets and active duty persons should be able to understand the humor there). I happened to spend a 6 month hitch in Bosnia with Special Forces Group 6. It was there, as a Squad Leader, that I lost two members of my squad in a firefight. I am not writing this to boast, only to thank the people that allowed me the blessing to return home, where I met my wife, started my family and continue to enjoy the freedoms that we Americans are afforded because they have died defending them. I truly believe that being an American gives us all the right to think the way we want to, say what we feel and live the way we live. There are those of us that may or may not agree with what our leaders are doing in Washington, but, regardless of how we feel about that, the men and women who rise every day and put on the uniform of the United States Military deserve our thanks and admiration. You will never find a more humble individual than a service member. Most of them, when thanked for the job they do, blush and say ‘Thank you’. The reason for that is they are doing their job, nothing less. And, to all of you, from one of your own, I say thank you for a job WELL DONE!!!!!
