Childhood Innocence
March 22, 2008
I just responded to Alex and Pumkin's 'Great Baby Name Debate'. It got me thinking. I had the name chosen for my boy 8 years before he arrived. I never considered that I would have to have someone else agree to the name. I just figured I would say, this is the name and that is that. I chose the name because I wanted at least one of my children to have an easily recognizable Irish name. I held on to it and waited until the day arrived. Luckily, his mother was on board with it and so, on May 4, 2004, Ian Michael entered the world. Then, as you all know, 5 months and 23 days later, the Sox gave me another great gift, the gift of a World Series Championship. I shared it with Ian on the couch. Just yesterday, as I'm watching Game 5 of the ALCS on dvd, Ian hops up next to me on the couch and, with a very serious look in his eyes, says, 'Daddy, the Yankees are yucky, that's why we can't like them and why they never win.' I'll admit, I got a little chocked up. I gave him a hug and thought to myself, 'He has no idea.' All he has known throughout his 3 plus years on this planet is that the Red Sox are a pretty damn good ball club. One that has one it all twice in his existence. I hope I has enabled whoever reads this to go back to that special place in their memory and recall what it's like to be a 3 yr old and have the world lay, innocently, before you and have anything be possible.
Have a great day, a Happy Easter, and, as always, Stay Faithful!
